The combined land area of the U.S. Virgin Islands is roughly only about twice the size of Washington D.C. But this tiny island territory is overflowing with fun things to see and do during your U.S. Virgin Islands vacation rental. The four main islands of the U.S. Virgin Islands are St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, and Water Island and they each have their own unique charms and natural wonders for you to explore during your island vacation rental.
 
St. Croix is famous among diving islands for its Cane Bay Wall – it drops nearly 13,000 feet which provides some stunning underwater scenery. The scenic island also has Point Udall, the easternmost territory under the American flag, and a casino in Frederiksted. Be sure and come visit St. Croix during their annual week-long St. Croix Food and Wine experience for a little taste of fantastic island flavor.
 
St. John is home to the Virgin Islands National Park – it’s over 7,000 acres and is home to rock carvings, coral gardens, and miles and miles of free hiking trails. One of the most popular hiking trails on the scenic island is the Reef Bay Trail – this gorgeous hike gives you amazing views of tropical forests, old sugar mill ruins, and even an island waterfall. Once you’ve hiked until your feet are aching, stop by Cruz Bay to see the peaceful harbor filled with sailboats and go shopping at Mongoose Junction.
 
Speaking of shopping, St. Thomas is home to some world famous shopping to be done at Magen’s Bay. Or stop by Coral World for their touch pool and underwater observatory. This marine park is also famous for breeding seahorses. While you’re on St. Thomas, be sure and do some snorkeling at Coki Beach – the local fish there will swarm around you for a little taste of a dog treat. And St. Thomas is home to Fort Christian, an old Dutch fort from the mid 1600s.
 
Water Island is home to some interesting ruins of an old sugar mill and surrounding trails. And, oftentimes, the Water Island residents will set up movies to watch on the beach.
 
Even the smaller islands have many opportunities for some sight-seeing. Buck Island Reef National Monument (on the Buck Island near St. Thomas) has plenty of walking trails and underwater snorkeling trails. But the real draws here are the abundant sea turtles and the endangered Least Terns who nest there.
